- INT. JOHN'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
-
- Retired at 28, John has done well for himself since the
- opening caper. A pulsating crowd of LA's bohemian-fringe
- shakes the foundation of his high-ceiling, Pacific Palisades
- home.
-
- AT THE BAR
-
- Clay and John prepare drinks in the blender.
-
- CLAY
- (serious)
- I'm thinking of going back into
- business. Jack wants me to crack
- companies for inside information.
-
- JOHN
- You can't do that!
-
- CLAY
- You're against it?
-
- JOHN
- No, I just don't think you know how.
-
- CLAY
- Well...
- (watches Jody)
- She does.
-
- Jody gyrates in a mob of new, one-night friends, apparently
- having the time of her life.
-
- JOHN
- (watches Jody)
- Ah. You really have upgraded.
-
- Jody weaves through the crowd to the bar.
-
- JODY
- (arriving with a bounce)
- Where's my drink?!
-
- Clay hands her a green-slush cocktail. She sips it.
-
- (reacting to the alcohol)
- What's this called, Toxic Waste?
-
- CLAY
- Jody, this is John Ashley, the bohemian,
- road-trip king, making a rare appearance
- in his home tonight.
-
- John hands off his drink to Clay then shakes her hand.
-
- JODY
- Pleased to meet you.
- (beat)
- How could you ever leave this place!
-
- JOHN
- Climb the corporate elevator and it
- could all be yours!
-
- On cue, John and Clay face each other and mouth a mock
- laugh. Similar in so many ways, they could be brothers.
-
- CLAY
- I'll get some more ice.
-
- Clay leaves with the ice bucket.
-
- JOHN
- How did you two meet?
-
- JODY
- Computer dating.
-
- JOHN
- (smiles)
- Still beta testing?
-
- JODY
- (chuckles)
- Yeah.
-
- IN THE CORRIDOR
-
- Clay weaves through the crowd. He catches a glimpse of the
- front door where...
-
- AT THE FRONT DOOR
-
- ...Diane has just walked in.
-
- CLAY turns, lifts the bucket to his shoulder to hide, and
- doubles back.
-
- AT THE BAR
-
- Jody laughs heartily at one of John's jokes. Clay breaks
- through the crowd and whispers in John's ear.
-
- JOHN
- (to Jody)
- If you'll excuse me.
-
- John rushes off to the front door.
-
- JODY
- What happened?
-
- CLAY
- (quick)
- Ice machine's busted. Have you seen the
- patio?
-
- Clay grabs a couple beers then pulls Jody through the crowd
- toward the back.
-
- AT THE FRONT DOOR
-
- John races at Diane with outstretched arms.
-
- JOHN
- Diane! You made it!
-
- DIANE
- Hey John--glad you're back.
- (gives him a kiss on the cheek)
- I'm afraid Clay's working tonight.
-
- John closes the front door behind Diane and spots Clay and
- Jody, frolicking off into the shadows.
-
- JOHN
- (mutters)
- If that's work, I'm coming out of
- retirement.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. JODY'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
-
- Jody and Clay stumble into the dark apartment, arms wrapped
- around one another. Clay shines a penlight around before
- Jody flips on the light, revealing a spacious studio
- apartment cluttered with boxes, signs, and equipment.
-
- JODY
- Sorry about the mess.
-
- Class looks around. Jody carelessly tosses her keys onto
- the sofa and slips out of Clay's FedEx jacket.
-
- (seductive)
- Come on--I want to show you something.
-
- Jody leads Clay to the corner with her bed. Clay rests the
- two beers he's been carrying on a desk there.
-
- (indicating the bed)
- Sit.
-
- Clay promptly obeys. When she stoops down in front of him,
- he closes his eyes.
-
- JODY'S HAND reaches behind Clay's legs and finds...
-
- A POWER STRIP crowded with cords. CLICK!
-
- On the desk next to her bed, a towering computer system
- powers up; the screen flashes and a fan begins to WHIRL.
-
- CLAY opens his eyes to see Jody standing proudly in front of
- her rag-tag collection of computer equipment. He can not
- hide his disappointment.
-
- JODY
- (off his look)
- It's not much, but really all I need.
-
- Clay slowly stands, hands Jody one of the beers, and
- inspects the computer as it boots up. Jody tries to twist
- off the bottle cap with no success. Clay unzips his waist
- bag, pulls out a bottle opener and opens her beer.
-
- JODY
- (referring to the bag)
- Jesuz! What all do you have in there!?
-
- Clay gives her a tour of his waist bag.
-
- CLAY
- (handling each item)
- Let me see...bottle opener, flashlight,
- pens, notes, an old calculator,
- (aside)
- I can't multiply to save my life.
-
- JODY
- Me either.
- (looking into bag)
- Any food?
-
- Clay shakes his head. Jody goes to the kitchen area.
-
- Clay strolls along a long bookcase filled with stacks of
- telephone system technical manuals.
-
- JODY
- My Dad is a PacTel technician.
- (sips beer)
- I spent most of high school re-
- programming the telephone system: re-
- directing calls, tapping the principal's
- line--you know, kids stuff.
-
- Clay reads a printout from the desk.
-
- CLAY
- I'd hate to get on your bad side.
-
- Jody returns with a bag of Bugles.
-
- JODY
- (coy)
- Then don't.
-
- CLAY
- (referring to the list)
- Looking for a new target?
-
- Jody drops into the chair in front of her computer.
-
- JODY
- Yeah.
- (playful)
- Give me one.
-
- Clay scans down the list.
-
- CLAY'S FINGER points to "McKesson, San Francisco, ..."
-
- CLAY (V.O.)
- How about...Vortech dot com.
-
- JODY
- Check.
-
- JODY reaches over Clay and turns on a boom box. The
- POUNDING RHYTHM of an electronic dance track drives her
- hacking groove. She flips switches, taps on the keyboard--
- all in sync with the music. The modem dials a number; the
- TONES PULSE like a percussion accompaniment.
-
- I've routed this line through five phone
- numbers and three long-distance carriers
- before connecting to the net.
-
- Impressed, Clay stands back and watches Jody; her hands
- dance over the keys. She pops a disk into a drive and a
- Bugle into her mouth. After one RING, the computer on the
- other end of the phone line connects with a SCREECHING
- sound.
-
- JODY
- (explaining)
- Telnet to the Vortech computer
-
- Clay pulls up a chair, inches from Jody. They reach into
- the Bugles' bag simultaneously, awkwardly touching hands.
-
- CLAY
- Ladies first.
-
- Jody smiles, grabs one, and delicately nibbles on it.
-
- JODY
- (back to hacking)
- Let's see what holes the brutes left us.
-
- The Vortech computer asks for a "USER ACCOUNT" and
- "PASSWORD." Jody quickly types a series of combinations:
- "GUEST/GUEST", "FIELD/TEST", "ANONYMOUS/ANONYMOUS", etc.
-
- JODY
- Nope, it kicked us off.
-
- CLAY
- (absorbed)
- Try FTP. See if you can edit the
- password file.
-
- Jody likes Clay's enthusiasm. She follows his suggestion.
- Now very close, they alternate between watching the screen
- and sneaking peeks at one another.
-
- JODY
- (seeing that the file copied)
- Looking good.
-
- ON SCREEN
-
- A list of names and passwords scrolls onto the screen.
-
- Let's add our own.
- (types)
- User name?
-
- CLAY
- Dan Quayle.
-
- JODY
- (smiles)
- Access?
-
- CLAY
- Super luser, of course.
-
- JODY
- (smiles, types)
- Copy it back to system...
-
- The modem lights FLASH.
-
- ...and try again.
-
- Jody leans back to let Clay type. He reaches over her body
- to the keyboard.
-
- ON SCREEN
-
- The computer asks for a "USER ACCOUNT:" D-A-N is typed.
-
- "PASSWORD:" Q-U-A-I-L is typed.
-
- CLAY (O.S.)
- You can't spell.
-
- JODY (O.S.)
- Neither can he.
-
- TCHONK! An official-looking title screen appears for the
- "VORTECH TOY COMPANY."
-
- CLAY
- We're in!
-
- In the moment of celebration, Jody kisses Clay. Pause to
- compute. Bytes and nibbles turn to kisses. They stand up
- and turn in an awkward embrace.
-
- JODY'S ARM reaches back to brace her weight; it lands on the
- keyboard and produces a long string of gibberish on screen.
-
- Clay lifts Jody onto the desk and partly pressing onto the
- keyboard; one key repeats. Characters run across the screen
- as their hands glide across each others clothes.
-
- Their bodies shift position and new keys are pressed. The
- computer responds: "COMMAND UNKNOWN."
-
- Clay takes off his waist pack, unzips it, pulls out a
- condom.
-
- They fall onto the bed and make love in the blue glow of the
- monitor.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. JODY'S APARTMENT - NIGHT - LATER
-
- While Jody sleeps in bed, Clay works in the blue glow of the
- monitor. He presses a button; the computer ejects a yellow
- disk.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. JACK'S OFFICE - DAY
-
- THE SAME YELLOW DISK, labeled "VORTECH," rests halfway in a
- disk drive. "ERASE ME WHEN DONE" is written in red on its
- label. Jack's hand pushes the disk into the drive.
-
- JACK struggles with the mouse, sliding it back and forth,
- but unable to control the contraption.
-
- JACK
- (muttering to himself)
- Stupid machine.
-
- He moves an icon around the screen aimlessly.
-
- Open...
- (clicks mouse again)
- Open the damn file...
-
- Finally, the drive WHIRLS and the screen fills with text.
-
- That's more like it.
- (to machine)
- Cross me again and I'll have you killed.
-
- Jack reads the stolen information with interest.
-
-
- INT. OUTSIDE JACK'S OFFICE - DAY
-
- Amused, Clay watches the executive through a crack in the
- door. At her desk, Diane breaks from computer work to look
- up some figures in a stack of folders.
-
- JACK (O.S.)
- (through intercom)
- Get Felder on the line.
-
- DIANE
- Aye, aye, Captain Jack.
-
- Clay walks over to Diane, who madly sorts through papers.
-
- How come...the more I do, the less I
- make and the less he does, the more he
- makes?
-
- CLAY
- It's all information and money.
-
- DIANE
- Ah.
-
- CLAY
- (leans close; whispers)
- Buy Vortech.
-
- DIANE
- Vortech?! They're a page short of
- Chapter 11!
- (beat, returning to work)
- Since when are you advising investors?
-
- CLAY
- I've been doing research.
-
- DIANE
- So that's where you've been.
- (acting casual)
- I missed you at John's party.
-
- CLAY
- (cautious)
- I had to leave early.
-
- DIANE
- (acting surprised)
- Oh, you were there.
-
- CLAY
- (caught)
- I just stopped by. I would have called
- you, but ...
-
- DIANE
- (interrupting)
- We haven't done anything in a week!
-
- She waits for a reply, but Clay has none. Disappointed,
- Diane returns to typing.
-
- CLAY
- Maybe we could go to the computer
- convention on Saturday?
-
- DIANE
- You know I hate those things.
-
- CLAY
- (acting)
- Oh, yeah.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. CONVENTION CENTER - DAY
-
- Hundreds of exhibits and thousands of people fill the
- convention center with commotion in one giant geek fest.
-
- Jody drags Clay through the exhibits like an eager child.
- She points to near and far exhibits, while he studies a map.
-
- AT ONE EXHIBIT
-
- Jody slips around the back of a sleek laptop computer to
- inspect its ports. Clay catches up.
-
- CLAY
- Nice.
-
- JODY
- (fast and excited)
- With THIS and THAT AE cellular link, you
- could hack...in the car, on the street,
- on the beach!
-
- CLAY
- I think YOU want one.
-
- JODY
- (looking around)
- Well. I would if I ...
- (seeing something)
- Oh!
-
- She rushes off.
-
- AT ANOTHER EXHIBIT
-
- When Clay catches up, Jody's drooling over some black box.
-
- JODY
- (in awe)
- The US Robotics 28.8K baud v.FAST modem!
-
- She caresses its shiny case.
-
- CLAY
- Come on, speed freak. I'm hungry.
-
- Clay drags her away from the booth.
-
- IN THE CENTER CORRIDOR
-
- She slips her hand into his. The happy couple strolls down
- the cement path through the dazzling forest of eye-candy.
-
- Ahead of them, a MAN stands on his tiptoes, peering over a
- crowd gathered around one of the exhibits. He gives up,
- backs out, and turns directly into the path Jody and Clay.
- It's Agent Ellis.
-
- ELLIS
- Clay!
-
- CLAY
- Agent Ellis! What are you doing here?
-
- ELLIS
- (jolly)
- Oh, just indulging my inner geek.
- (to Clay, but glancing at Jody)
- And you?
-
- CLAY
- The same.
-
- Jody watches, waiting to be introduced.
-
- ELLIS
- You haven't called; our hacker friend
- must be lying low.
-
- CLAY
- Yeah.
-
- Beat. Jody nudges Clay.
-
- (reluctant)
- This is Jody.
-
- JODY
- Pleased to meet you.
-
- Clay watches nervously as Jody shakes the FBI agent's hand.
-
- ELLIS
- (to Jody, condescending)
- Have you found anything of interest
- here?
-
- JODY
- Oh, I don't know.
- (showing him up)
- Motorola's flaunting the first PowerPC
- 620 chips, Newton just got an ISDN link,
- and Microsoft added ESD encryption, ...
- (aside to Ellis)
- ...but it's really hairy.
-
- ELLIS
- Really.
-
- Ellis watches Jody, sizing her up.
-
- CLAY
- You should check it out.
-
- Clay takes Jody's hand forcibly leads her away.
-
- ELLIS
- (concentrating on Jody)
- I will.
-
- CLAY
- See you.
-
- They exchange good-bye waves. Ellis watches Clay and Jody
- as they walk away down the path.
-
- ELLIS
- Good to meet you, Jody.
-
- Jody beams; Clay cringes.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. JACK'S OFFICE - DAY
-
- Jack reads the Wall Street Journal at arm's length.
-
- JACK
- (behind the paper)
- This morning, Vortech stunned the world
- when it announced a new line of gas-
- powered toys that promise to "devastate
- the home."
- (lowers paper, addresses someone)
- But WE already knew that...
-
- Clay reclines in the comfy client sofa, a smug look spreads
- across his face.
-
- (walking over to his desk)
- ...and pulled in a healthy profit.
-
- Jack steps to the safe behind him and opens it, revealing a
- pile of paper, money, and a gun.
-
- Sharon and the clients are pleased
- and...
-
- Jack pulls out a thin envelop and hands it to Clay.
-
- I see great promise in your future.
-
- Diane steps into the office with two cups of coffee, upset
- by this degrading chore.
-
- JACK
- (making up stuff; turns away)
- So, ah, when can you jack in the modal
- to the winker-dink?
-
- Diane places a mug on Jack's desk.
-
- CLAY
- (going along with the cover-up)
- Ah...tomorrow, if you like.
-
- When handing him his mug, Diane "accidentally" spills some
- on his lap. Clay twitches with pain.
-
- DIANE
- Oh! I'm so sorry.
-
- Clay gives her a look of contempt; she returns the look.
-
- JACK
- (turning back around)
- Good, good.
-
- Diane leaves the room. Jack approaches Clay, who blots the
- coffee in his lap.
-
- (serious)
- Unders
- Understand?
-
- Clay nods.
-
- Good. Here's another.
-
- With that, Jack slaps a Post-It note onto Clay's forehead.
- It sticks. Slightly shaken, Clay peels off the note, reads
- it, and stuffs it in his waist pack.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. JODY'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
-
- Jody opens the door to see Clay, holding out roses and
- carrying a ribbon-wrapped box under his arm.
-
- CLAY
- Hi ho.
-
- Jody spots the box and reads the label: it's the US Robotics
- 28.8K baud v.FAST modem of her dreams. She ignores the
- flowers and dives for the box.
-
- JODY
- (tearing it open)
- Is this for me!
-
- CLAY
- Yup.
-
- Jody races the black box over to her computer, leaving a
- trail of Styrofoam peanuts behind her.
-
- JODY
- (busily installing the modem)
- What's the occasion?
-
- CLAY
- I just wanted to treat you to something
- you'd like.
-
- Jody fiddles with wires under the desk. Clay, looking for a
- place to put the roses, finds a crate full of old memory
- boards and dumps the flowers in, to be forgotten.
-
- JODY
- (ecstatic)
- Yeah...I love it.
-
- Jody finishes the installation, steps up and smothers Clay
- with a wet kiss.
-
- CLAY
- Now you can crack systems twice as fast.
-
- JODY
- (sulking)
- Yeah, but your office's direct network
- link is still ten times faster than any
- modem.
-
- CLAY
- You wanna go, don't you?
-
- JODY
- (childlike)
- Yeah!
-
- CUT TO:
-

-
- ON SCREEN

- bye.
- (hangs up)
-
- Jack picks up a micro-cassette recorder and dictates a

- (disinterested; into recorder)
- Diane...send Mr. Felder's son a

-
- DIANE
- You're getting in over your head.
-
- CLAY
- What are you talking about?
-
- DIANE
- I know all about your hacking and Jack's
- phenomenal streak of investments.
-
- CLAY
- Now YOU'RE getting in over your head.
-
- The phone rings. Clay answers.
-
- CLAY
- Hello Jack...
- (Clay signals for her to wait)
